Infertility Treatments

Infertility is not a new problem to people these days.  Couples who feel alone whenever facing infertility should not feel such because infertility can actually happen to anybody, and not just to a very small number of couples.

For a number of years, various methods of treatments have been explored in order to help address infertility. For some people, it is a matter of eating certain types of fruits. For some, it is changing their lifestyle or eating more of a certain type of food, some turn to prayers alone, while some undergo various types of treatment.

Technology and science is indeed a blessing in this case because for those who suffer from fertility problems no longer need to scratch their heads in confusion whenever they still fail to find a treatment for infertility. These days, various scientists have taken upon themselves to find solid solutions for infertility. As a result, medications, treatments, exercise regimen and other types of treatment are now available for couples who are suffering from infertility.

The main treatments used for infertility include the following:

  • Assisted contraception  - this is where various techniques including in vitro fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, gamete intrafallopian transfer, and intrauterine insemination are being used to aid those who have infertility problems.
  • Drinking medicines that improve fertility – there are a lot of medicines that are used to help improve the fertility of a person. This can either be used together with other methods in order to assist conception, whereas it can also be used by itself.
  • Surgical methods – this treatment is used whenever the doctors find that it is necessary in order to treat infertility.

There are various types of medicine that are recommended to treat infertility. Some of these medicines include the following:

  • Metformin – often offered to women who suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome, and those who have not responded well to clomifene
  • Clomifene – the most commonly used medicine as it has been tried and tested for several years. It is a tablet that makes the pituitary gland release more gonadtrophin than what is normally produced.
  • Gonadtrophin medicines – these are medicine that contain gonadtrophine, which helps improve fertility in men who suffer from sperm count problems.

Surgical treatments are done whenever the following situations are the known causes for infertility:

Endometriosis – a surgery done to help women who have fertility problems due to endometriopsis
Fibroids  - a surgery done to remove the fibroid as it may be considered as the cause of infertility
Male infertility – one of the causes of male infertility is when the sperm is blocked by a certain abnormality in the epididymis of the testis

Assisted conception is a type of treatment that is performed when the specialist believes that the said procedure is the best solution to treat the infertility problem of the couple – especially when no other causes have been determined. Some of these treatments include the following:

  • In vitro fertilization (IVF)
  • Intrauterine insemination
  • Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT)
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
  • Embryo donation
  • Egg donation

These are just samples of the various types of treatment that are being discovered every day. These, however, are the more tried and tested versions that have worked for most couples who had fertility problems over the past few years. Since there are many types of treatment, it would be best to consult the doctors to help determine the cause of the infertility, and as result, the couple may receive the proper treatment that applies to their situation.

It must be mentioned that aided contraception and fertility treatments may lead to certain complications such as fallopian pregnancy, stress, over-stimulation of the ovaries, and ovarian cancer.
